School staff and students have found inventive ways to honour Remembrance Day. As gathering restrictions due to COVID-19 have impacted traditional school-wide assemblies, several virtual ceremonies were held with the wider school community, including families and those learning remotely.
°µºÚ±¬ÁϹÙÍø Central Secondary had a mix involving school-wide moments, such as readings and songs over the PA system and trumpets in the commons, as well as individual activities within classes. Students also put significant effort and creativity into an art installation at the school – complete with projected images on a large screen.
Principal Dianne Carr:
This pandemic has truly pushed our ideas into overdrive. Our leadership students and our art students collaborated on the installation. So proud of the teachers and students!â€
Elsewhere, students at Edmonds Community School were honoured with a virtual visit from a veteran. Veteran Reg Rozee spoke to intermediate students in preparation for Remembrance Day, itself.
Alpha Secondary held a virtual ceremony which included a special drama performance.
As they do every year, students throughout the District created works of art and explored other learnings associated with the day, such as what peace means.
Earlier in the month, students and staff also joined Canadians in acknowledging and honouring the Indigenous people who have served and continue to serve. A video created by the District’s Indigenous Education department explains the history of National Indigenous Veterans Day, which is on November 8.
