More than 1000 students from 40 classes at 20 schools participated in a project called Design an Ad. It’s a career exploration opportunity for elementary students to try their hand at marketing and advertising and includes a chance to be published in the local newspaper. This year marked a record number of participating students in this annual project put on in partnership with the °µºÚ±¬ÁϹÙÍø Now.
°µºÚ±¬ÁϹÙÍø Chair Bill Brassington:
One of the important opportunities the °µºÚ±¬ÁϹÙÍø School District provides to learn a new skill is through career exploration. This competition for Design an Ad is an example of that… Relationships and partnerships strengthen all that we do and support our commitment to continuously improve, as we work to empower students for the opportunities of today and tomorrow.â€
Classes design an ad for a local business or organization, which then selects one for publication in a special feature in the newspaper. One of those organizations that students design an ad for is the °µºÚ±¬ÁϹÙÍø School District. Students work toward a specific theme, with this year’s theme for the District reflecting our win of a recent °µºÚ±¬ÁϹÙÍø Now readers’ choice award: Favourite Place to Learn a New Skill.
Representatives from the °µºÚ±¬ÁϹÙÍø Now visited classrooms to talk to students about what makes a good advertisement and marketing piece to enhance their career exploration learnings. The project culminated with chosen ads being published by the °µºÚ±¬ÁϹÙÍø Now on March 30 in the Design an Ad special feature. There is also a display of selected ads and runner up choices for the community to appreciate at Lougheed mall for most of April.
Additional opportunities for career exploration are offered across the District, such as through Programs of Choice, which are strengthened by our partnerships with post-secondary institutions and industry. The options include everything from technology and trades to exploring the world of engineering.
